Charlene Anderson, the Jackson Hole, Wyoming-based owner of&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/charanderson.com\/?page_id=32\">Purveyor of All Things Creative<\/a>, says it\u2019s an important part of her business\u2013and should be for yours, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Charlene has been selling on eBay since 1998, and Amazon since 2002. \u201cWhen I began selling, you didn\u2019t need photos on eBay to make listings sell,\u201d Charlene says with a chuckle. \u201cI started my business when I lived in Hawaii, which has its own shipping challenges, but I immediately started selling internationally, because I knew the world was a big place and I didn\u2019t want to miss out on global sales.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>eBay international sales and selling internationally on Amazon quickly became a large part of her business. \u201cMy international sales went big very quickly because so many people don\u2019t do it,\u201d notes Charlene. \u201cThey are uncomfortable selling internationally and think it\u2019s too much of a hassle and too risky. Which is totally wrong!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, international sales make up 40% of her eBay revenues. The top countries she sells to are Australia, U.K., and Canada. When asked why she thinks Australia is her top international market, Charlene offers, \u201cAustralia always has a hard time getting things from the U.S. Many U.S.-based companies will ship to Canada but not the rest of the world.\u201d This can potentially make selling internationally very profitable for those who decide to take a jump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em; font-weight: 600;\">The Shipping Process for eBay International Sales<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSome sellers might want to consider the eBay Global Shipping Program, but for me, it was easy enough to use and send the shipments myself.\u201d Using USPS through Endicia, integrated Customs Forms are printed out on the postage and shipping label, making <a href=\"\/features\/international-shipping\/\">international shipping<\/a> as easy as domestic shipping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Payment is easy, too. \u201cAll of my eBay sales go through PayPal, and eBay and PayPal keep the buyer\u2019s address on file for shipments,\u201d says Charlene. Also, eBay says \u201cGenerally, buyers pay additional costs such as duties, taxes, and customs clearance fees. To avoid problems, make sure that your listing clearly states this.\u201d Charlene has inserted wording in her listings that clearly outlines this information for her international buyers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Shipping Process for Amazon International Sales<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The majority of Charlene\u2019s sales come from Amazon, and she uses their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shipstation.com\/blog\/let-amazon-fulfill-your-orders-through-shipstations-new-fba-integration\/\">Fulfilled by Amazon<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s a dream because they take care of all the warehousing and shipping.\u201d Amazon determines which products it can sell internationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you are already selling through FBA, you\u2019d be crazy not to sell internationally through FBA. You check one box, upload an image file of your signature for customs forms, and you are selling internationally through FBA. It\u2019s ridiculously easy!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Types of Items to Ship Internationally<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been very intentional in determining the products I sell,\u201d notes Charlene. \u201cOver the years I\u2019ve loved products that were great sellers, but I had to stop carrying them due to breakage and other shipping issues. Today I focus on items that are small, lightweight and sturdy, to keep shipping costs low, make storage easy, and to keep damages to a minimum.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Charlene focuses on small and lightweight packages to sell internationally, your business does not have to restrict itself to those parameters. USPS can send international shipments of varying sizes ranging from postcards to 70lb packages. Check the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usps.com\/international\/preparing-international-shipments.htm\">USPS size &amp; weight requirements<\/a> to make sure you are sending packages internationally correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Places Where Charlene Doesn\u2019t Ship<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI will ship anywhere I can insure my package,\u201d says Charlene. \u201cRight now, I don\u2019t ship to Brazil, as there are too many issues with customs delays, and I can\u2019t get insurance for Croatia and a few other countries, so I don\u2019t ship there. I\u2019m also lucky that few countries have restrictions on arts and crafts imports, so I can sell pretty much anywhere. Other types of products, such as leather, shoes and clocks, you can\u2019t sell to Italy, for example.\u201d To find out restrictions by country, you can use the <a href=\"https:\/\/pe.usps.com\/text\/imm\/ab_toc.htm\">USPS tool<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">International Returns<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have never had an international return, and I ship 300 international packages a month! International buyers are careful. They know it\u2019s expensive to return items.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Charlene has not had to deal with pesky returns when sending packages internationally, but you still might have to. USPS <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usps.com\/international\/insurance-extra-services.htm\">offers international shipping insurance<\/a> and extra services to help protect you from merchandise difficulties and returns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final Thoughts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Charlene, who is an eBay Top Rated Plus Seller and a Power Seller, shared her tips on sending packages internationally.
